Effluvium

In The Meno, Socrates – with characteristic irony – defines color as "an effluvium of shape": a pedantic and deliberately unhelpful answer, offered less to explain color than to frustrate Meno's demand for definition. And yet, precisely as a piece of philosophical mischief, it names something real.

In this collection, five Ocala artists explore different modes of figuration using highly synthetic palettes. Across these works, color appears not as a stylization of form, but strikes us as necessitated by it – flowing outward into vision with the force of light.
